Googong New Town

Queanbeyan NSW

RobertsDay was engaged by CIC Australia to craft a vision, lead the structure planning team and set the development agenda for this new township through a series of visioning and design forums convened in the woolshed at the centre of the 800 hectare property.

Vision to venture

RobertsDay successfully led a masterplanning and business case strategy for Googong’s inclusion within Queanbeyan’s strategic growth area. RobertsDay facilitated the development strategy and made key masterplanning representations as part of the Minister’s Enquiry into the growth areas and the Local Environmental Plan exhibition processes. The result: a priority recommendation for rezoning of the Googong Township.

Affordability and diversity

5,500 homes of varying types catering for aproximately 16,000 people within five neighbourhoods and a mixed-use town centre. Attainable housing will comprise at least 10% of the housing mix.

Respecting the ecology and environment

183 ha (23%) of Googong has been set aside for parklands and open space, including an extensive central parkway, the Googong Common.  Natural landscape features, including wetlands, lakes, rejuvenation of native bushland and native species propagation programs are to be undertaken within Montgomery Creek.

Sustainability and innovation

Googong New Town incorporates Australia’s most ambitious water management targets, innovative resident stewardship environmental programs, employment and enterprise development strategies, and mechanisms for housing affordability. Energy efficiency will exceed the BASIX 25% saving with measures achieving a 40% saving.

The Monaro refers to the plateau region where Googong is located.
